what I’m looking for
Hi! You’ve reached the portfolio and blog of Misty Cripps. I’m a highly skilled User Experience Designer (UX), Interaction Designer (IxD), and User Researcher. I’m looking for my next big opportunity in a design leadership role.
Okay, so what am I looking for? I’m interested in opportunities outside of Texas. I’d like to be in a leadership position where I can manage others and the work, but get my hands dirty as well. I enjoy managing people on projects (though I’ve never yet had direct reports) and look forward to building my skills and experience further in that area. So, I’m looking for a position where I can exercise both my managerial and design skills, or there is a career trajectory to get me there. I’m really interested in emerging technologies and trends like IoT, the No UI movement, and service design.
I have worked at all ends of the design spectrum — from conception to delivery. I started out in enterprise software at Saba and Oracle (PeopleSoft), working mainly on learning management and human capital management software. There I worked mainly as a UI designer/front- end developer. (I don’t do that much anymore, except with WordPress.) I moved on to Yahoo! working as a lead interaction designer for Y! Movies, TV, Health, Food, and Relationships sites. After leaving Y!, I moved on to the consulting world at frog design. I worked on all manner of projects — including websites, software, mobile, tablets, and wearables. My deliverables varied based on project, but I’ve lead and performed from discovery all the way through code complete. After frog, I decided to hang out my own shingle and go it on my own. I have freelanced mostly at smaller design firms in Austin, holding positions from Senior Designer to Creative Director.
When I’m not designing, I’m hanging out with my husband who is a Marketing Specialist, our two dogs (Yellow Lab and Rat Terrier), and a mercurial parrot. I love reading, dystopian TV series, writing, zoos, exploring, traveling (ask me about the bus ride from Belize to Guatemala), and just learning about new things. I also volunteer my time at Dream a Dream Therapeutic Horsemanship leading children and adults in rides, taking care of the horses, and generally doing anything they ask me to do.
What I Am Not
I’m not a visual designer. I don’t produce comps. I provide art direction, but I’m not a hands-on graphic or visual designer.
I also don’t do a lot of prototyping, mainly because I’ve had the luxury of working with many talented design technologists who can do that in an amazing array of languages. If I do a prototype, it’s usually something along the lines of an interactive PDF or HTML5/CSS. But I’m far from being an expert in any programming languages. And, honestly, it isn’t something I enjoy doing. Much of this site has been hand coded (mainly because WordPress is, well, WordPress). So my skills (or lack thereof) are on full display.
Though I’ve worked quite a bit in enterprise software, it’s not one of my passions. I have also done a considerable amount of web work, but haven’t worked much in e-commerce.
Thought for the Day
Good design is making something intelligible and memorable. Great design is making something memorable and meaningful. – Dieter Rams
My latest project was an article about CCOs published in the July/August 2015 issue of Texas CEO magazine.
